The Glashütte tradition began in 1845, when Ferdinand Adolph Lange settled in the Saxon town. After the war and the division of Germany, in 1951 the state merged seven companies into VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe. After reunification, Heinz W. Pfeifer bought the firm in 1994, by then with 72 employees, and named it Glashütte Original to tell it apart from imitations. The Swatch Group acquired it in 2000.
