Kintaro Hattori opened a watch shop in Ginza, Tokyo, in 1881, and in 1892 created Seikosha to make them. From there came the Laurel in 1913, the first Japanese wristwatch. Seiko launched its first dive watch in 1965 and in 1969 the Quartz Astron, the world's first quartz wristwatch. In 2012 it did it again with the first solar GPS watch. Today it ranges from Seiko 5 to King Seiko, while Grand Seiko has run as an independent brand since 2017.
