Your first watch by budget: what each step really buys and where to stop

For 100 dollars you already get a watch more accurate than a 10,000-dollar one. What you pay for after that is not precision but finish, history and desire. A guide with documented prices to know what you gain at each jump, and when the next one stops making sense.

Machine translation pending human review. Figures and sources match the original.

Before talking brands, a truth almost no commercial guide writes down: on accuracy, the cheap watch wins. A Casio F-91W is estimated at ±30 seconds a month; a chronometer certified by COSC can drift up to 6 seconds a day and still pass. Everything bought from here on is bought for another reason.

Prices in this guide are for reference. Their origin varies: some official records, some price lists and some stores. They are given in the currency in which they are documented, unconverted; US prices exclude sales tax and European ones include VAT.

Up to 1,000 dollars: the zone that needs no apology

Up to 1,000 dollars: eight watches with US prices

Recommended price in dollars, before tax, from the official Seiko, Citizen, Hamilton and Tissot websites, and G-Central for Casio; recorded in our Archive records as of November 2026. European prices unchecked.

Under 100. A Casio. The F-91W cost about 20 dollars in 1989 and little more than 10 according to IEEE Spectrum, and nothing cheaper challenges it for the role. We have not confirmed its current European price.

Around 100. The DW-5600 and the GA-2100. They give 200 metres of water resistance for about 100-110 dollars.

From 300 to 500: the first mechanical. Here the emotional border is crossed. The Seiko 5 Sports SRPD55 costs $350, the Presage Cocktail Time $475 and the Citizen Tsuyosa $495. At $295, the Citizen Chandler is solar: another legitimate way to forget about the watch.

What you gain: a movement that needs no battery and a different relationship with the object. What you lose: accuracy and 41-42 hours of reserve, which means wearing it fairly often or resetting it.

From 600 to 1,000: the most rewarding step. If we had to recommend just one, it would be this, and that is opinion. The 38 mm Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical costs $675, hand-wound with about 80 hours of reserve, though only 50 metres of water resistance. The Tissot PRX Powermatic 80, $850, which runs to about €775 in European stores, gives 40 mm, 80 hours and 100 metres. Both nearly double the previous step's reserve.

From 1,000 to 5,000: where Rolex stops ruling

On Chrono24's used market, Rolex weighs 34% between $5,000 and $10,000, 7.4% between $2,000 and $5,000 and 1% between $500 and $2,000. Below 5,000, choosing usually means choosing something else, and there is plenty to choose from. This band has the Longines Spirit at $2,550, the Oris Aquis Date at $2,800, the Cartier Tank Must at $3,900 and, in Europe, the Tudor Royal, from €3,160 to €3,390. Nor do you need to spend that much to dress well: Chrono24 reports that 22.4% of dress watch buyers spent under €2,000.

From 1,000 to 5,000 dollars: four official prices

Recommended price in dollars, before tax, from the Longines, Oris and Cartier websites, recorded in our Archive records in November 2026. The Tank Must is the 25.5 mm size.

This jump is the hardest to justify and the one least to do with telling the time. The cheapest on this list costs nearly seven times what European stores ask for a PRX. What you buy is finish, certifications, a resale network and a name.

This band holds, according to the sources in the chart, the Tudor Monarch at €5,400, the Speedmaster 38 at €6,400, the Seamaster Diver 300M at €6,500 and the Oyster Perpetual 36 at €6,600. The distance between price and availability shifts with the market, all the more at Rolex: a list price is just a number if no watch is available, and nobody publishes that.

Another useful surprise: on power reserve, the €775 Tissot beats the €6,600 Rolex. Paying more does not buy every figure.

And second-hand?

The temptation is logical, especially above 1,000 euros. So is the risk.

A rejection is not always a fake, but a third gives pause. Bezel also tells of a genuine Patek Aquanaut stolen in Ibiza, with a fake certificate in the box, and of a fake IWC Ingenieur able to fool a professional seller. Papers have value, about a 10% premium according to the same firm, but guarantee nothing by themselves. Bear in mind that Bezel lives from selling that inspection, so its figures are not neutral.

Buying used makes sense if the seller stands behind the watch. If not, the saving can prove expensive. For orientation, the median used market price was around $5,900 in the first half of 2026, according to an EveryWatch estimate: half sold for less, and with a median of 43 days to sell, the hurry is rarely the buyer's.

Three rules before paying

  1. Decide on size first, not brand. On Bezel, seven in ten orders are 40 mm or more, but new releases are heading for smaller cases and diameter alone deceives. Try it on the wrist.
  2. Demand 100 metres if you will swim with it. We have explained why 30 m is not 30 m.
  3. Set a ceiling and respect the order. First buy a watch you will use every day, then the one you desire.

Editorial opinion: a first watch should not be an investment. If you like it, it has done its job. The best budget is the one that lets you wear it without fear of scratching it.
